Before, during and after
A picture’s worth a thousand words and here’s the barn’s restoration tale. Even though it had four strong, straight walls and an old, but intact roof, it was no small undertaking transforming it from a storage dump into a cosy holiday home.
- … and here’s the bathroom
- … here’s the twin …
- Upstairs, here’s the double bedroom…
- Somewhere for breakfast or maybe a game of cards
- … and the other – I just need to go shopping for kitchen equipment
- … and here’s downstairs, looking one way …
- It’s finished! Here’s the outside…
- Last minute finishing touches include adding stair rails.
- Floor finished, it’s time for the kitchen, which goes in on the hottest day of the year – 36°C
- The sofas arrive two weeks early – luckily the floor’s down, even if the grouting’s still wet!
- Outside, the pergola’s going up
- I’m none to sure about the colour the stairs have been stained, but they’re almost finished
- Progress at last downstairs: the flagstones start going down
- Floor’s in and it’s now time for painting
- Major progress, the bathroom’s got a new window and is now ready for tiling
- Downstairs is still a mess, but the front door has arrived. It’s a pity it’s only leaning against a wall!
- Meanwhile, Miro starts building the stairs. See the gap – I almost put my foot through that!
- This wall’s a tall one.
- Amir finished, plasterboarding begins. It’s time to start building bedrooms.
- Outside done, he moves back inside for some grouting.
- He then moves outside. Once the stone’s cleaned he can start repointing.
- Upstairs, Amir starts cleaning up the old stone in the bedrooms – it’s a big job, and he’s downstairs to do as well.
- … then a trench is dug right across. It’s for the house’s sewer pipe to link everything to the mains drainage – if it ever arrives!
- What a mess! the groundfloor’s stripped back to the earth …
- … and this is them finished. We now need windows and shutters.
- … this is the second, upstairs …
- We needed 2 new windows. This is the first going in, downstairs …
- Piping for the bathroom’s concreted in. “No, you can’t move it,” says Toni.
- Meanwhile the floorboards were laid, so there was somewhere to store the tiles. We now have an upstairs!
- First thing to be changed was the roof. Off it all came and then on it all went.
- … and this is the plan for upstairs.
- This is the plan for downstairs…
- … and there wasn’t really an upstairs. This is the ceiling.
- Downstairs was full of junk, it was almost impossible to get inside …
- … and the back’s got even less windows
- Front – nice walls, but few windows
