Motovun – Oprtalj – Zrenj – Momjan – Grožnjan
This drive takes in some of Istria’s most stunning scenery, and its largest medieval hill towns: Motovun and Grožnjan. In their day, all these hill-top villages were bustling towns; one even had a huge castle.
It basically involves visiting Istria’s two main and best known inland attractions, with a magnificent scenic drive between them and pretty detours. It’s 48 km long and takes around an hour and a quarter as a simple drive which, with the sightseeing stops along the way, makes it a fantastic day out. For more information on each of the places, click the links to their official webpages.

- B: Oprtalj – Great views, lovely loggia and winding streets to explore.
- C: Zrenj – Spectacular, panoramic views.
- D: Momjan – Small place with huge, atmospheric ruined castle.
- E: Grožnjan – In one word, ‘stunning’. If you visit nowhere else, see this perfectly preserved small town, listen to musicians practicing while you browse the high-quality craft shops.
Walk the railroad:
- Originally running from Porec to Trieste, much of the old Parenzana railway line has been restored as a walking/cycling route. It passes through Motovun, Oprtalj and Grožnjan, so you can stop off on your drive, stroll along the line and enjoy the scenery. How far you go is up to you.
Be warned, in high summer Motovun and Grožnjan can be rather busy.
